Many NFT marketplaces charge the sellers with a pretty hefty gas fee for minting new NFTs, which can sometimes reach near $100. For smaller digital artists, the gas fee is a major headache because they now have to manage to sell their art for a higher price to make a profit. But thankfully, you can create NFTs on OpenSea for absolutely no cost using the Polygon blockchain.

  • Step 1: Connect your wallet to OpenSea. This wallet will just be used to confirm actions you take in the process, so you don’t need to put any money into it. Simply create an empty wallet (preferably Metamask or Coinbase) and it’s good to go.
  • Step 2: Hover over your account circle then select ‘My Collections’. Then click ‘Create a Collection’. This has to be the first step as NFTs on OpenSea can only be created within a collection.
  • Step 3: Set up your collection by choosing a logo image, featured image, banner frame as well as filling out the name, description, category… You can also set a Royalties, which is a percentage that will go to an address of your choosing monthly when a user re-sells your item. The royalty fee cannot be greater than 10%.
  • Step 4: You now can choose between the ETH or Polygon blockchain. Choose the Polygon blockchain if you don’t want any gas fee. After all this is done, click ‘Create’.
  • Step 5: Click on the collection you just created then select ‘Add Item’.
  • Step 6: You will see the place to upload your image, video, audio or 3D model. In addition, you can add an external link so people can go to your own website to learn more about the piece. Finally, set a price and number of copies for your art.

As you can see, minting an NFT is very easy, the hard part is selling them. If you’re someone who hasn’t dabbled in digital arts before, focus on networking, marketing to gather yourself a following. Good luck to all you artists out there!
